Nraug Hmoob Ntsuab

Translation: Hmong Green Lad

By: Maiv Muas Xyooj

When I finally began to feel a bit more comfortable getting to know myself as a Hmong Dawb (Hmong White dialect) girl with a Moob Leeg (Hmong Green dialect) history and dynamic in America.

Welcome to my very first studio produced song and music video created with curiosity and a healing heart. Thank you to the abundant support from my family, friends, and community. I hope you enjoy it with me as I tell a story through my beautiful Hmoob language.

Raised by Stories, Curious by Experiences

I am no expert of Hmong history, but only of my own experience. This project was created to tell a story of the many different experiences I’ve seen and went through as a Hmoob Dawb (White Hmong) girl in America. The animation in this project represents children’s books, Kwv Txhiaj (Hmong folk singing) books, and cartoons. When I was younger, I was always curious and sometimes even furious about why I never saw Hmoob in American books, literature, and classrooms. Books are full of knowledge. I've decided to go on an adventure through this love letter and storybook.

A lot of things/concepts influenced me to write my song the way it is, and the language as is, such as the White Hmong and Green/Leng Hmong dialects. I fully recognize that Moob Leeg and Hmoob Ntsuab are different and the dialect discrimination within our community continues to exist. I wrote this song to show how it was like growing up as a Hmoob Dawb girl who thought that the world was just Hmoob Dawb and Hmoob Ntsuab. While unaware of the Moob Leeg concept and having a lack of exposure to the many parts of history, the character proceeds to learn. She spends her time learning about the culture as is based on the media, politics, and elders who told the folktales. I share that in this Hmoob Dawb girl’s life, she’s confused and heartbroken as to why her Green dialect lover left her, while also navigating the complexity of her Hmong identity, dialects, and culture in America.

Key words:

Nraug Hmoob Ntsuab 🥀

Open Verse: (1)

Nraug hmoob ntsuab

Hmong green lad

Ua nkauj hmoob dawb mob siab tiag tiag es

Is it because I don’t know/cannot speak green

Koj niam koj txiv thiaj li tsis nyiam kuv es

Therefore your mother and father doesn’t like me

Kuv mam kawm hmoob ntsuab

I will/can learn green

Kuv mam nyeem hmoob ntsuab rau koj mloog

I will/can read green for you to listen to

Kuv tus mi nraug hmoob

My dear Hmong green lad

Seb cov cua puas tshuab tuaj cuag koj

In hopes that the wind blows this melody to you

Come back and love this Hmong white lass like before

"Big props to the animator! Really creative approach to opening a notebook to a love letter and transitioning into an animation of the letter of falling down, telling the story of a relationship. Plus closing the book where it takes you back to real life. I love that. It really dives in to the perspective of of the experience into reading a children’s book. And Maiv muas love seeing the great works you put into this. This is a step forward towards in how we creatively work to tell stories within the modern Hmong diaspora congrats on your first music video"

"This really hits the spot. My husband is white and I’m green. Been married 20 yrs now, not a sec second goes by he doesn’t let our language barrier breaks us. The best part I love about him is he understands green and his grandmother is green and she knew he will marry someone who is green. Our grandmother (RIP) still til today protected us."

What Others are Saying

"Love it. Did not know this was still an issue. I tell my mom be very thankful he is hmoob. I am hmoob dlawg and my husband is hmoob leeg. I try my best but then it becomes a mixture of the two dialects. I feel for this as parents still can’t let go of certain things and it breaks two very in love people apart. All I can say is let us love who we love. Stop putting boundaries on our love."

"I am a Hmong Leeg daughter, i am very impress of the ending of the switch. I know the feeling of being with a Hmong dawb it’s very hard. Our words are a twist. My husband is Hmong dawb he doesn’t understand Hmong Leeg or know to speak it. The words have a good meaning, the song hits the spot. It gives a good/ bad vibe how back then OG would always convince Hmong leeg should date their Hmong leeg and Hmong dawb should date their own kind because the language. I once dated a Hmong dawb before I met my husband his family didn’t like me because I am Hmong leeg. I was willing to learn to speak. It wasn’t still good enough. He left me.. I’m happy to say thank you to him. I found my husband. He loves me even though I am Hmong leeg."
